Austin City Council may give more consideration to clarity of bike parking requirements | The Daily Texan
Byclists may soon receive more consideration from city officials regarding the convenience of parking downtown as Austin continues to strive to be a more pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly city.
An ordinance proposed by the city’s Planning Commission and Public Works Department amends Austin’s Land Development Code to redefine and clarify bicycle parking. The ordinance would clarify various parts of the code, including taking bike parking into consideration when modifying parking for
motor vehicles for existing sites. It would also clarify requirements for bicycle parking locations from “as convenient as that of motor vehicle parking” to 50 feet or less from the entrance of a site, according to the ordinance.
During its meeting Thursday, the Austin City Council set a May 9 public hearing to hear further discussion from the community on the amendment.
Annick Beaudet, manager of the city’s Bicycle Program in the Public Works Department, said the amendment simply improves on current bicycle parking requirements rather than creating new ones.

Austin police promote bicycle safety
AUSTIN (KXAN) - The Austin Police Department on Tuesday launched the first phase of its Safe Bike Initiative in an East Austin community.
Phase one includes educating motorists in the Austin community about the Vulnerable Road Users Ordinance. This ordinance was created to protect vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, runners, construction workers and cyclists.
Carl Bradtmiller of East Side Pedal Pushers endorsed the initiative.
"It takes a lot of experience to be a safe rider," he said. "I think that's what a lot of people lack. They see people ride the way who maybe ride all the time - and they're less experienced riders. You can only account for what you're going to do on a bike,
"You can never say for sure what a car's going to do. So you have to ride like cars don't see you at all, like you're invisible."
Bradtmiller said both cyclists and motorists need to be aware of -- and respectful of -- one another
"A car passes you and there's no incident," he said. But the one time that it doesn't go well - that you don't anticipate something - that's when it ends badly, because the car is ultimately a lot bigger.
"The outcome of a car and a bike collision is never in doubt - it's always going to end worse for the cyclist."
According to Austin police statistics, three bicyclists were killed in 2012 and 1 was killed in 2011. Bicyclists represented 4 percent of all Austin transportation fatalities in 2012.

Oak Hill Parkway workshop looks at improving bike and pedestrian mobility
Oak Hill cyclists and trail enthusiasts were front and center at the latest installment of the Oak Hill Parkway environmental workshops hosted by the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (CTRMA). The workshop, held Tuesday, March 19 at the ACC Pinnacle, focused on ways to improve bike and pedestrian mobility in Oak Hill.
Rick Perkins, vice president of the Oak Hill Trails Association, gave a presentation on in-progress trail projects, such as the ‘Y’ to Barton Creek (YBC) trail.
Perkins said the YBC would provide Oak Hill residents with an off-road route to downtown.
“This is going to be our major connection to the Barton Creek bridge,” Perkins said. “We hope to bring everybody in Oak Hill on a bicycle to downtown.”

America's Best Bike Cities: 13. Austin, TX | Bicycling Magazine
Population: 790,390
Claims to Fame: The city installed 35 miles of bikeways in 2011; a new urban-trail plan emphasizes off-street paths, like the 6-mile Lance Armstrong Bikeway. The Austin Bike Zoo animals—including an 80-foot rattlesnake powered by six riders, tandem butterflies, and a bat tricycle—are an institution at parades.Biggest Challenge: Though tireless bike advocates have a near-perfect record for projects they’ve championed, involvement from the thriving cycling community remains sporadic.
